Ubisoft has announced significant layoffs, affecting 185 employees across multiple studios, as part of a strategy to implement “more efficient operating models.” This decision comes in light of the company’s ongoing efforts to ensure long-term success and operational sustainability.
Breakdown of Layoffs
The internal memo revealed that the layoffs include approximately:
– 65 positions at Ubisoft Dusseldorf
– 100 roles at Ubisoft Leamington and Ubisoft Reflections
– 20 roles at Ubisoft Stockholm
Additionally, the Leamington studio will be permanently closed. The company emphasizes that these changes are aimed at improving efficiency and meeting financial targets.
Management Statements
Benedikt Grindel, Managing Director of Production Zone 4, stated, “We believe these decisions are essential to improve our operational efficiency and ensure the long-term sustainability of our studios.” He acknowledged the uncertainty these changes bring but reassured affected employees of the company’s commitment to support them during this transition.
In a similar vein, Thomas Andren, Managing Director of Production Zone 3 and Stockholm studio, expressed empathy for those impacted: “We deeply understand how difficult this is, and supporting everyone through this transition is our utmost priority.”
Future Projects in Question
As Ubisoft navigates these layoffs, questions remain regarding the status of ongoing projects. Reports indicate that Ubisoft Reflections was developing an unannounced WW2 live-service extraction shooter named CREST, while staff at Ubisoft Leamington were working on content related to Avatar. However, it is unclear if any projects have been canceled due to the layoffs.
Company’s Strategic Moves
In addition to the layoffs, Ubisoft is exploring potential partnerships to bolster its financial standing. Talks with Chinese company Tencent are reportedly underway for a new venture focused on Ubisoft’s current assets.
